Wilpena Pound is a high clearing in a ring of mountains in the Flinders Range. Attempts at agricultural use of the pound were defeated by the very difficult access through a narrow gap in the mountains.

The Goyder line marked the northernmost limit of agricultural cultivation in South Australia.
