The English way to make lace is on a flat pillow.
I use English Midlands bobbins, which have rings of beads, called spangles. The spangles stop the bobbins rolling on the pillow, and add weight to the narrow bobbins. All the bobbins on my pillow are made of wood. Bobbins can also be made from bone and plastic.
