Milanese is a braid lace.
At the Lace Guild AGM in April 2001 I took a one day Milanese workshop with Pat Read. The piece of lace made in the workshop was a cursive letter L, about three inches tall. The L would make a nice monogram to go on a cover cloth, but not for me. So I started doodling cursive versions of my initial, S. After experimenting I preferred the look of using only one braid throughout, but the pricking could be worked with one braid on the lower curve and a different braid on the upper curve. The curves in the S are quite tight which restricts the braid choice. The illustrated version was worked in Archway braid.

Techniques used are starting on a scroll, gaining on pins to go round curves and finishing with a rib
The pricking should be about 7cm high (approx 3 inches). For this size use 16 pairs of Madeira Tanne 30. If the pricking isn't 7cm, then either adjust the pricking in a graphics program or change the thread to match the pricking.
